PRE-K PROGRAM

Blended Preschool Program

Somonauk School District #432 offers a daily preschool program for children ages 3-5 years old.  A blended program is designed for typically developing students and special needs students who currently have an IEP (Individualized Education Program).

Preschool is an important beginning to your child’s educational endeavors.  It is here that children learn to understand the importance of school, follow a daily routine, socialize/play with children of similar age, and learn the prerequisite skills to be ready for kindergarten.

Your child will be welcomed into a safe and secure environment.  Classrooms are designed to encourage independent learning opportunities as well as small and large group activities.  All lessons and activities promote social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development.

Our creative curriculum includes actvities for fine motor development; recognition of numbers and counting; letter and sounds recognition; cognitive skill development of sorting, colors, shapes; and imaginative play.

What is Preschool Screening?

Preschool screening is a service used to identify children ages 3-5 who may qualify for special education services.  Our screening team will briefly assess your child’s developmental skills in the areas of pre-academic learning concepts, motor skills, and communication, as well as hearing and vision.

What to expect at the screening:

  • Vision and hearing test.

  • Family health history questionnaire.

  • Academic and Social Emotional

  • Language and communication skills

*Please bring any completed questionnaires with you to your appointment.*

What happens after screening?

Upon completion of the screening, a team member will meet with you to review your child’s results. If your child demonstrated developmentally appropriate skills no further action is required, if the team determines there are areas of concern, a further evaluation may be recommended.

If you suspect that your child is experiencing one or more delays in her or his development, please contact James R. Wood Elementary School.

To schedule an appointment or ask questions related to screening you can call (815) 498-2338 ext 1224. Screenings are held at Somonauk Public Library .
