Dear Parents / Guardians:
As many of you already know, our third through eighth grade students will be taking the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) beginning March 3, 2014. This is the assessment that the state of Illinois uses to measure our progress towards the No Child Left Behind provisions. Students in grades three through eight will be tested in reading and mathematics, while students in grades four and seven will be tested in science. These tests are only one measure of your child’s academic performance. Your child’s daily school work, teacher feedback, report cards and daily assessments should also be considered when determining your child’s overall school performance.
The following are some tips on preparation for the tests:
1. Get plenty of rest.
2. Eat a good breakfast on testing days.
3. Bring all of the materials that you may need such as pencils, erasers, etc.
4. Listen to all directions from the teacher and ask questions if you do not understand something.
5. Believe in yourself and give your best effort!
Since the last thing we want to do is create an environment of test anxiety, the last tip is the most important. All we can ask is that our students try their best!
JRW will be hosting an ISAT kick-off breakfast for all students in 3rd and 4th grade at 7:45 on Monday, March 3rd in the cafeteria. Students who ride the bus are able to simply get off of the bus and go directly to the cafeteria that morning.
The ISAT assessment will be replaced in 2014-2015 with the new PARCC assessment, which are aligned to the new Common Core State Standards that were adopted by the State of Illinois.
The new tests are being developed in response to the longstanding concerns of educators, parents, and employers who want assessments that better measure students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills and their ability to communicate clearly. PARCC is also designed to provide timely results and inform instruction. With this assessment, students – and their teachers – will not have to wait until they are in the next grade to learn their scores and see where they require additional help and attention. Furthermore, PARCC will provide a coherent and aligned grade 3-11 assessment system that reflects Illinois’ learning standards and measures what students actually learn in the classroom.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact by phone or email.
